Once again Joomla will be participating in the Google Summer of Code, and this year we have 6 excellent student projects that were accepted by Google on April 22, 2016. Congratulations to all the students that will be joining the Joomla Google Summer of Code project this year! Welcome to the J!Family.

See the list of Projects that we have selected this year

With 78 applications submitted, it was a difficult task to narrow down the list of potential students to the final 6 Projects. Thanks to all of the Mentors and Joomla community members that helped us determine who got in. With the help of some great Joomla volunteers, we will have Mentors for each student to help guide them through the process.

If you would like to keep up with the students as they progress, Students will be posting updates on the Joomla Community Magazine throughout the summer starting in May.

What is Google Summer of Code?

Google Summer of Code is a program designed to encourage university student participation in open source software development.

Some quick facts about the Google Summer of Code program.

  • GSoC gives students an opportunity to work on real-world software development projects.

  • Encourages students to get involved in Open Source projects, bringing new developers into our ecosystem.

  • Students gain new skills and make new contacts in the Open Source community.

  • Allows students to work with mentors that can share experience and knowledge with them.

  • Students who pass their midterm and final evaluations will be paid a stipend by Google for their work in Joomla.

If you want to read more about the program, just visit our Joomla GSoC 2016 Home,

You can find out all the information you need and more on this page. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask a question on the Mailing List and someone will be happy to help.

Joomla! Basque

Basque joins the officially released language packs for Joomla!, an award winning Content Management System (CMS). The Joomla Translations Working Group has accredited Basque as an official language pack for Joomla 3.5. With the addition of the Basque language, Joomla websites can now be published in 66 languages spoken around the world. These language packs come handy when developing both monolingual and multilingual sites using Joomla!

The users can now choose Basque as the language of their choice for the installation of Joomla! In addition, Basque can be used as the default back-end administration language and front-end site language. With this language pack, users will see the Joomla labels and messages in the Basque language. The language pack can be installed using the feature Install Languages or just like installing any other Joomla extension. If a user wants to customise any label or message, it can be done easily using language override for Basque.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Miel Loinaz and his team members Asier Sarasua, Mikel Lizarralde, Nagore Ruiz de Escudero who have created the Basque language pack. The information about the Basque language pack is available at https://community.joomla.org/translations/joomla-3-translations.html#eu-es.

The aim of the Joomla Translations Working Group’s Localisation Project is to continuously strive to provide an up-to-date translation of core Joomla into various languages. This is a significant project, and requires around ten thousand phrases to be translated. The current list of language packs for Joomla! 3 is available at https://community.joomla.org/translations/joomla-3-translations.html.
